The Louisville Cardinals might be a bit shorthanded but I’m sure North Carolina State doesn’t think so after a 75-65 decision has the Cardinals in the Elite Eight. The Wolfpack were up by one at the intermission but faltered late with UL taking control with a late 9-0 run. NC State never found the scoring touch at 38% but were a solid 9-20 from long range while Louisville sank half their looks and held an 18-10 advantage at the stripe. Montrezl Harrell paced four double digit scorers with 24 points and seven boards on 9-12 from the floor followed by a 17 point, 14 rebound performance from Terry Rozier. Quentin Snider was next in line with 14 points while Wayne Blackshear netted ten points with Anton Gill chipping in with seven points.
The Michigan State Spartans just never seem to go away and Oklahoma knows that all too well after falling to MSU 62-58 in a Sweet 16 battle. The Sooners led by four at the break and didn’t trail until late but once the Spartans got the lead they held on to it like bulldogs. Michigan State held a slight 38.6%-36% edge in marksmanship which added up to a few more baskets while a 9-4 advantage on threes and six straight free throws in the closing seconds were decisive. Travis Trice was the offensive star with a contest high 24 points on 7-14 from the floor including four bombs. Denzel Washington was the Spartans only other double digit scorer with 18 points and seven boards on 6-17 from the field with four more threes. Gavin Schilling chipped in with eight points while Brandon Dawson snagged a game high eleven rebounds.
Whether you like or dislike either Michigan State or Louisville you have to be impressed with how far these teams have come although it’s not shocking given the past success of each program. The Cardinals have survived and I guess you could say prospered despite the suspension of Chris Jones while Tom Izzo continues to squeeze the most from his talent which is a great coaching job if you believe as I do that this isn’t his best team. No line is out so please check back…
