The Wisconsin Badgers match up with the Duke Blue Devils for the National Championship.
Much ado has been made of Tom Izzo when it comes to the NCAA Tournament and with good reason but his Michigan State Spartans ran in to a buzz saw in the Duke Blue Devils who dominated both ends of the floor in an 81-61 decision Saturday. The Blue Devils were up eleven at the half and never let up as the Spartans were held to 40% shooting and forced in to 14 turnovers. In contrast the Blue Devils fired away at 52% and held a 27-10 advantage at the foul line. Justise Winslow led a trio of double digit scorers with 19 points and nine rebounds with Jahlil Okafor next in line with 18 points and six pulls. Quinn Cook netted 17 points followed by Tyus Jones and Grayson Allen tossed in nine points apiece.

The Wisconsin Badgers did what no other team has done this season and that was beat Kentucky. The Badgers closed the game with big foul shots and shutdown defense to hand the Wildcats a 71-64 defeat although UK didn’t go down easy with 48% marksmanship with six more shots and three more baskets. Wisconsin was just as strong with 48% shooting of their own with an 18-22 performance from the charity stripe to outscore Kentucky by nine which was decisive. The size of the Wildcats was a non factor with Wisky holding a 30-22 edge on the backboards. Frank Kaminsky was at his best with game highs of 20 points and eleven rebounds on 7-11 from the field while Sam Dekker tossed in 16 points on 6-9 shooting. Nigel Hayes and Bronson Koenig each added 12 points and a combined nine boards.
This was supposed to be a Kentucky-Duke final but in defeating the Wildcats the Badgers proved they could play defense and score against a bigger and arguably more talented team. My feeling is Duke might be even better then UK in the talent department with so many scoring options. Having said that, the Badgers beat the supposedly ‘too big and too athletic ‘ Wildcats and I’ll back them once again…
