The Eastern Illinois Panthers and Indiana Hoosiers open their season Friday night at the Assembly Hall.
The Eastern Illinois Panthers look to build on a successful season that included 18 victories. Trae Anderson returns after leading EIU with 13.2 points and 4.9 rebounds while Cornell Johnston averaged 9.1 points and 4.7 assists. Luke Piotrowski grabbed 2.1 rebounds and Luke Norman shot 50 percent from deep. The Eastern Illinois Panthers were one of the top shooting teams in the country last year, knocking down 37.5 percent from deep and 44 percent from the field. The problem is that Eastern Illinois lost a lot of that production despite returning Anderson, the Panthers leading scorer. Jay Spoonhour is certainly coming off his best season as a head coach, but the Eastern Illinois Panthers have their work cut out for them if they’re going to repeat last year’s success.

The Indiana Hoosiers enter this season with Big Ten and national championship dreams. Yogi Ferrell returns to Indiana after leading the way with 16.3 points and 4.9 assists while James Blackmon Jr. averaged 15.7 points and 5.3 rebounds. Troy Williams was the third double-digit scorer and Robert Johnson dished 2.3 assists. The Indiana Hoosiers return their top five scorers from a team that shot 46.4 percent from the field and 40.6 percent from beyond the arc. The Indiana Hoosiers are very, very deep offensively but have to be much better on the defensive side if they’re really going to make that championship run this season. The Indiana Hoosiers have won seven of their last 10 home games.
The Panthers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and 4-11-1 ATS in their last 16 Friday games. The Hoosiers are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games.
Eastern Illinois just is not deep enough with so many new/young players to hang with an offensive powerhouse such as Indiana. I expect this to be a season opener blowout.
