The Mount St Mary's Mountaineers and Maryland Terrapins open their season Friday night at the XFINITY Center.
The Mount St Mary's Mountaineers look to keep building their program after winning 31 games the last two years. BK Ashe will lead the way again after averaging 11.9 points and 2.6 rebounds while Gregory Graves averaged 10.1 points and 7.4 rebounds. Junior Robinson dished 3.3 assists and Taylor Danaher grabbed 3.8 rebounds. The Mount St Mary's Mountaineers return their top two players from last season but have to shoot better than 40.2 percent from the field. However, Mount St Mary’s relies more on its defense than anything, holding teams under 65 points per game last season. The Mount St Mary's Mountaineers has lost six of their last nine road games.
USA TODAY Sports
The Maryland Terrapins enter this season as national champion contenders for the first time in a while. Melo Trimble will lead the Terps after averaging 16.2 points and three assists while Jake Layman is averaged 12.5 points and 5.8 rebounds. Jared Nickens shot 39 percent from deep and Damonte Dodd grabbed 3.8 rebounds. The Maryland Terrapins not only have experienced contributors from last season, but they also landed one of the top center recruits in Diamond Stone. The Terps are a balanced basketball team that shot 37.6 percent from beyond the arc last season and allowed just 39.5 percent shooting from the field. As of right now, there’s a strong case to be made that the Maryland Terrapins are the team to beat in the Big Ten.
The Mountaineers are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games. The Terrapins are 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
You have to be careful with big chalk early in the season, as rust and new players learning on the fly takes a while for teams to get rolling. But Maryland is one of the top teams in the country and should roll here. I expect the Terps to blow this game out of the water and win by at least 30 points.
