The Washington State Cougars and the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks face off on Friday at Beasley Coliseum as they tip off their 2015-2016 college basketball seasons.
Much of the early season talk surrounding the Washington State Cougars is about the loss of last year’s top player DaVonte Lacy rather than what the Cougars bring to the table. WSU will turn to Josh Hawkinson who averaged 14.7 points and 10.8 rebounds per game last season. Que Johnson is back for his sophomore season after averaging 6.1 points and shooting better than 85 percent from the free throw line. Wazzu also brings in four JuCo transfers including 7-fot center Conor Clifford and Charles Callison who had a monster year at San Bernadino last season. Ernie Kent has his work cut out for him this year but Washington State should surprise a few teams.
USA TODAY Sports
The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks come into this season with muted expectations but there is upside potential for Jack Murphy’s team. Kris Yanku is the best of the bunch of the returning players after averaging 13.8 points per game. Center Ako Kaluna averaged 8.6 points per game and Jaleni Neely averaged 7.9 points per game. NAU brought in a solid recruiting class and several freshmen should see the floor.
Washington State is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games and 4-1 against the spread in their last five non-conference games. Northern Arizona is 9-3-1 against the spread against the Pac-12, 20-7-1 against the spread in their last 28 road games, and 13-3-3 against the spread in their last 19 games.
This looks like a big number and I just don’t see the Cougars being good enough to cover it.
