The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles and Memphis Tigers open their season Saturday night at the FedExForum.
The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles enter their second season under Doc Sadler after winning just nine games last year. The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles have been going through some off-the-court issues and lost pretty much their entire roster from last season. In fact, two of Southern Mississippi's most experienced players in Norville Carey and Kevin Holland are considering sitting out this season to make matters worse for the Golden Eagles. If that’s the case, Southern Miss will have only one player from last season that started more than two games. Southern Miss wasn’t good at either end of the court last season, especially on offense where the team averaged just 60.1 points. It’s going to be another long year for the Golden Eagles.

The Memphis Tigers look to get back to the NCAA Tournament after just 18 wins last season. Shaq Goodwin will lead Memphis after averaging 9.6 points and 7.1 rebounds while Avery Woodson averaged 7.9 points and 2.4 rebounds. Kedren Johnson dished 2.7 assists and Markel Crawford grabbed 2.3 rebounds. The Memphis Tigers will continue to be a scrappy team that relies on their defense, which allowed 63.1 points on 39.7 percent shooting last season. The return of Goodwin will certainly help offensively, as will recruits Dedric Lawson and K.J. Lawson. Memphis is a team that sticks to its defensive style and rebounding, and as long as those traits are there, the Tigers are going to be a threat in the AAC.
The Golden Eagles are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road games and 2-7 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games. The Tigers are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 vs. Conference USA and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Golden Eagles are 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Memphis and 2-6 ATS in the last 8 meetings overall.
Southern Miss is a complete mess and doesn't have a complete roster due to NCAA sanctions. Memphis is a possible NCAA Tournament team and doesn't let up defensively. This one could get ugly. Don't say I didn't warn you.
