The Line: Penn State -13.5 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
The VMI Keydets and Penn State Nittany Lions open their season Saturday at the Bryce Jordan Center.
The VMI Keydets enter their second season in the Southern with a new head coach in Dan Earl. QJ Peterson returns after leading VMI with 19.6 points and four assists while Tim Marshall averaged 11.7 points and 2.7 rebounds. Julian Eleby grabbed 4.5 rebounds and Phillip Anglade shot 60 percent from the field. The VMI Keydets return three double-digit scorers from a team that shot just 40 percent from the field and turned the ball over 15 times per game. Still, Peterson has shown to be one of the top players in the Southern and with help from his experienced teammates, VMI could come close to doubling last year’s 11-win total. The VMI Keydets have lost seven of their last 10 road games.
USA TODAY Sports
The Penn State Nittany Lions look to take that next step in the Big Ten after 18 wins last year. Shep Garner will lead PSU after averaging 9.2 points and 2.7 rebounds while Brandon Taylor averaged 9.1 points and 5.3 rebounds. Donovon Jack shot 45.3 percent from the field and Jordan Dickerson grabbed 3.3 rebounds. The Penn State Nittany Lions lost their top player in D.J. Newbill but still have some scrappy players who are willing to prove themselves. The one guy to watch is freshman Josh Reaves, who will add some spark and athleticism to a rather slow PSU team. Penn State will have its work cut out this season but still has some promising players who could string together some surprising wins.
The Keydets are 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 Saturday games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Nittany Lions are 3-12 ATS in their last 15 non-conference games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
This is an interesting line simply because Penn State struggles to score with consistency, and that will continue to be the case without Newbill. Also, VMI has guys who can play at a high level, which includes possibly the best player in the Southern. I like the Keydets and the points here.
