The Line: UC Davis -1.5 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
The Portland Pilots will travel to the Pavilion (UC Davis) to take on the UC Davis Aggies this Sunday night in College Basketball action.
The Portland Pilots (1-0, 0-0 WCC) were able to kick off their 2014-15 season with a win after defeating Oregon Tech Owls 98-81 this past Friday. Portland used a 19-6 run at the end of the first half to take control of this game as they went into halftime with a commanding 48-33 lead. Offensively, Portland was very solid as they shot 52.2% from the field and 46.7% from beyond the arc. The Pilots were able to get 12 steals in the game and forced the Owls into committing 15 turnovers. Leading the way for Portland was Bryce Pressley scored 30 points (8-11 3PM-A) while pulling 8 rebounds and dishing out 3 assists. Also contributing was Ray Barreno (8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Jazz Johnson (14 points, 3 steals). Portland lost a lot of pieces from their 2014-15 team in Kevin Bailey (14.1 ppg, 2.4 rpg) and Thomas van der Mars (10.4 ppg, 8.0 rpg) but the Pilots still do have Alec Wintering (12.3 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 5.7 apg) who will lead the offensive from the point guard position this season. Portland will need their back court of Wintering and Pressley to lead them this season but it doesn’t look as if the Pilots will be anything more than a middle of the pack WWC team this season.
USA TODAY Sports
The UC Davis Aggies dropped a tight 79-71 (OT) game against the North Dakota State Bison this past Friday afternoon to start off the season 0-1 (0-0 Big West). UC Davis shot 42.6% from the field but struggled from the FT line hitting just 15 of 31 (48.4%) of their free-throws in the loss. UC Davis has a chance to win in regulation however, Darius Graham missed two free-throws with 16 seconds left and the Aggies allowed Kory Brown of North Dakota State score with three seconds left to send the game to OT. Leading the way for UC Davis was Josh Fox who had a double-double with 16 points and 12 boards and Neal Monson who also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Darius Graham chipped in 13 points and 3 assists while Nolan Berry had 11 points and 3 rebounds off the bench. It will be hard for UC Davis to put another 25 win season as the Aggies lost Big West player of the year in Corey Hawkins who averaged 20.9 ppg, 4.9 rpg, and 3.4 apg.
The Pilots are 17-6-1 ATS in their last 24 non-conference games however, just 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The Aggies are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games following a ATS loss however, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
Portland was able to put up some points in their first matchup however, will face a much tougher test on the road against UC Davis. Both Portland and UC Davis lost major pieces from their 2014-15 teams but I liked how UC Davis fought against a very good North Dakota State team on Friday. The line is pretty low for this team and as I don’t think Bryce Pressley is going 8 for 11 from beyond the arc again, I think UC Davis will be able to notch their first win of the season at home and cover this small spread. Take UC Davis to cover.
