The Long Beach State 49ers and the BYU Cougars face off for late night/early morning mens college basketball action as part of ESPN’s 24 Hours of Basketball.
The Long Beach State 49ers got their season off on a winning note downing BYU-Hawaii 91-57. Long Beach State shot 47.7 percent from the floor including 35.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc while grabbing 46 rebounds while defensively allowing just 27.9 percent shooting against. Roschon Prince and A.J Spencer led LBSU in scoring with 16 points each. Nick Faust had 14 points and seven rebounds, Noah Blackwell had 13 points, and Justin Bibbins had 11 points. This is a significant increase in the quality of opponent for Long Beach State.
USA TODAY Sports
The BYU Cougars got their season started with a win by pounding Utah Valley in their opener 85-54. BYU shot 40.5 percent from the floor including 28 percent from beyond the three-point arc but dominated the boards out-rebounding Utah Valley 68-38 and allowing just 26.4 percent shooting against. Chase Fischer led the Cougars by scoring 20 points. Kyle Collinsworth had 17 points and nine rebounds, Kyle Davis had 17 points and 20 rebounds, and Nick Emery had 10 points. BYU dominated from start to finish but they face a tougher opponent here.
Long Beach State is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven non-conference games, 16-7 against the spread against the West Coast Conference, and 1-4 against the spread following a win. BYU is 6-2 against the spread following a win, 9-4 against the spread in their last 13 road games, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five non-conference games.
I expect Long Beach State to play tough and hang with the Cougars at least close enough to cover if not win outright.
