The Penn State Nittany Lions and Duquesne Dukes meet Thursday at the CONSOL Energy Center.
The Penn State Nittany Lions look for a 3-0 start after wins over VMI and DePaul. The Penn State Nittany Lions are averaging 65 points on 41.7 percent shooting and allowing 56 points on 37.3 percent shooting. Brandon Taylor is averaging 17.5 points and four rebounds while Shep Garner is averaging 15.5 points and 2.5 assists. Payton Banks is the third double-digit scorer and Julian Moore is grabbing seven rebounds. The Penn State Nittany Lions are shooting 37.5 percent from deep and have four players averaging at least eight points. The Duquesne Dukes also look for a 3-0 start after wins over Seton Hall and New Orleans. The Duquesne Dukes are averaging 95.5 points on 57.8 percent shooting and allowing 73 points on 39.2 percent shooting. Micah Mason is averaging 21.5 points and four assists while Derrick Colter is averaging 15 points and five assists. Darius Lewis is grabbing 11 rebounds and Jeremiah Jones is dishing four assists. The Duquesne Dukes are sixth in the country in field goal percentage and are also shooting 40.8 percent from downtown. Duquesne has six players averaging at least eight points and have scored 78 or more points in six of its last nine games. Now Duquesne just has to limit its 16 turnovers per game in order to really take that next step.
The Nittany Lions are 4-13 ATS in their last 17 non-conference games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a S.U. win. The Dukes are 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a S.U. win and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. The favorite is 3-1-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The Duquesne Dukes are on fire offensively and I'm afraid the Nittany Lions don't have enough firepower to keep up if those shots keep falling. Yes, PSU is a step up in comp, but he Dukes can flat out shoot the basketball and that usually shows up regardless of who you play.
