The Florida International Golden Panthers improved to 2-0 (0-0 C-USA) on the season after defeating the NAIA Florida Memorial Lions 67-51 this past Monday. Florida International was able to jump out to a commanding 17 halftime lead and never let Florida Memorial get within double-digits in the 2nd half. The Golden Panthers shot 45.3% from the field in the victory, however, struggled at the FT line hitting just 50.0% (14-28) of their FT’s. Florida International was very strong defensively as they held the Lions to just 26.2% shooting from the field and 19.2% (5-26) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Golden Panthers was Adrian Diaz who had a double-double with 17 points, 14 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Also chipping in was Daviyon Draper (19 points, 6 reb, 3 stl) and Jason Boswell (10 points, 5 reb, 4 ast). Florida International is led by forward, Adrian Diaz who is averaging 16.0 ppg, 12.5 rpg, and 3.5 bpg, and was selected to the Pre-Season All-Conference Team. Offensively, Florida International is currently shooting 48.1% on the season and has down most of their damage inside as they are only averaging 4.0 3-pointers per game. Defensively, The Golden Panthers are holding teams to just 25.6% shooting however, as their opponents have been Trinity Baptist and Florida Memorial, we shouldn’t read too deep into any of their season numbers.

The James Madison Dukes dropped to 1-1 (0-0 CAA) on the season after they dropped an 86-73 matchup against the West Virginia Mountaineers this past Monday. James Madison hung tough with the Mountaineers but never really was to make a big run to make it a close game in the 2nd half. James Madison shot 41.2% from the field and was outstanding at the free-throw line hitting 91.7% (22-24) of their free-throws. The Dukes were outrebounded by the Mountaineers by a 42-31 margin and committed 19 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for James Madison was Shakir Brown who had 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists off the bench. On the season, James Madison has been led by Shakir Brown (20.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 2.5 apg), Ron Curry (15.0 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 4.5 APG), and Tom Vondanovich (10.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg). Offensively, James Madison is shooting 46.4% on the season and is averaging 10.0 three-pointers per game. Defensively, the Dukes are allowing opposing teams to shoot 47.5% however, have a turnover margin of -5.
The Golden Panthers are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 Friday games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Dukes are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a S.U. loss and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 vs. C-USA.
Florida International has an outstanding player in Adrian Diaz who is a sure bet to produce against the frontcourt of James Madison, however, it’s really hard to judge currently how good this FIU team with be as their first two games this season have come against a non D-I teams. James Madison has been impressive as they were able to upset Richmond on the road to open the season and played West Virginia tough in their recent loss. Although I’m a bit worried about Diaz for FIU, I think the Dukes guard play in Curry and Brown is outstanding and that they’ll be able to do enough damage from the outside on their home court to win this one and cover the spread. Take James Madison to cover.
