The Dayton Flyers had no trouble improving to 2-0 on the season after they defeated the SEC Alabama Crimson Tide 80-48 this past Tuesday. Dayton used a 24-6 run to end the first half to take control the game at halftime and keep the defensive pressure in the 2nd half in the victory. The Flyers were outstanding defensively as they forced the Crimson Tide to shoot just 29.8% from the field and commit 20 turnovers. Dayton shot 42.9% (9-21) from beyond the arc and outrebounded Alabama by a 47-34 margin. Leading the way for Dayton was Charles Cooke who had 21 points, 7 rebounds and Steve McElvene who had a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks. On the season, Dayton has been led by Charles Cooke (14.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2.0 bpg), Darrell Davis (12.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.0 apg), and Ryan Mikesell (12.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.0 apg). Offensively, in their first two games, Dayton is shooting 49.1% from the field while averaging 8.5 three-pointers per game. Defensively, the Flyers are holding opponents to just 30.6% shooting from the field and have a rebound margin of plus 14.5.
The Tribe are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Flyers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 vs. the CAA and 10-4 ATS in their last 14 home games.
William & Mary are once against one of the CAA favorites this season as although they lost their all-time leading scorer in Marcus Thornton (20.0 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.9 apg), they still returned their other four starters. Dayton has gotten off to a nice start of season even without when of their best players in Dyshawn Pierre who is currently suspended due to an off-court incident, and is the clear-cut favorite to win the A-10 this season. William & Mary is a solid club that picked up a big win on the road this season against NC State (85-68), however, even with Pierre, Dayton is the better team and is always difficult to play on their home court. I just don’t think William & Mary are getting enough points here, so I’m taking Dayton to cover.
