The Oakland Golden Grizzlies fell to 1-1 (0-0) on the young season after they were defeated by the Colorado State Rams, 95-89, this past Sunday. Oakland was able to take a two point halftime lead in the contest but had trouble getting many defensive stops in the 2nd half allowing the Rams to score 54 2nd half points to secure the win. Oakland shot 44.6% from the field and was impressive at the FT line hitting 93.8% (15-16) of their FT’s. The Golden Grizzlies allowed Colorado State to shoot 46.2% from the field and 37.5% (12-32) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Oakland was Kahlil Felder who had 23 points, 3 rebounds, and 10 assists. On the season, the Golden Grizzlies have been led by Kahlil Felder (25.0 ppg, 11.0 apg, 3.5 rpg), Percy Gibson (21.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg), and Sherron Dorsey-Walker (17.5 ppg, 11.5 rpg, 2.0 apg). Offensively, Oakland is shooting 40.8% from the field over their first two games while averaging 22.0 assists per game. The Southern Illinois Salukis were able to stay perfect on the season and improve to 4-0 (0-0 MVC) on the season after defeating the Sam Houston State Bearkats, 86-81 (OT), this past Saturday. Southern Illinois used a 15-1 run to end the first half to get back into the game and got a strong performance from their star, Anthony Beane, in OT to get the win. Southern Illinois shot 46.3% from the field and as solid at the FT line hitting 81.8% (27-33) of their FT’s. The Salukis allowed the Bearkats to shoot 51.9% from the field and 42.1% (8-19) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Southern Illinois was Anthony Beane who had 8 of his 21 points in OT while gathering 3 rebounds and 4 steals in the victory. On the season, the Salukis have been led by Anthony Beane (21.5 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.0 spg), Mike Rodriguez (12.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 4.0 apg), and Bola Olaniyan (8.3 ppg, 8.5 rpg). Offensively, Southern Illinois is shooting 45.8% from the field on the year while averaging 6.8 three-pointers per game. Defensively, the Salukis are holding their opponents to 40.9% shooting from the field and have a turnover margin of 4.3.
The Golden Grizzlies are 9-2-1 ATS in their last 12 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and 16-6-1 ATS in their last 23 games overall. The Salukis are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 13-5 ATS in their last 18 games following a S.U. win.
The Oakland Grizzlies might have not been able to pull the upset on the road against a good Colorado State team, but has to be encouraged by the performances of their star players Kahlil Felder and Percy Gibson. Southern Illinois has gotten off to a nice 4-0 start, however, the Salukis haven’t played the toughest schedule to start the 2015-15 season. Southern Illinois has a great player in Anthony Beane, however, I’m still not convinced that they have enough of a supporting cast to be able to defeat quality teams, and although Oakland certainly can give up some points, I think Felder and Gibson will be too much for Southern Illinois to handle. I’m taking the Golden Grizzlies to cover this small spread on the road.
