The Cleveland State Vikings will travel to the Xfinity Center to take on the 3rd ranked Maryland Terrapins this Saturday night in College Basketball action.
The Cleveland State Vikings dropped to 2-3 on the season after being defeated by the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 77-66, this past Wednesday. Cleveland State went on an 11-0 run in between the 1st and 2nd half to get within three points, however, couldn’t get any closer in the loss. Cleveland State shot 39.0% from the field and struggled from three-point range shooting just 29.2% (7-24). The Vikings allowed the Jackrabbits to shoot 50.0% from the field and put South Dakota State on the FT line 32 times in the game in which the Jackrabbits made 24. Leading the way for Cleveland State was Kenny Carpenter who had 17 points and 7 rebounds from off the bench. On the season, the Vikings have been led by Demonte Flannigan (10.2 ppg, 6.8 rpg), Rob Edwards (10.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.4 spg), and Andre Yates (9.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg). The 3rd ranked Maryland Terrapins stayed a perfect 5-0 (0-0 Big 10) after defeating the Rhode Island Rams, 86-63, this past Wednesday. Maryland jumped all over Rhode Island early in this one taking a 44-28 halftime lead and never allowed the Rams to get within single digits in the victory. Maryland was outstanding offensively as they shot 60.0% from the field and 58.8% (10-17) from beyond the arc. The Terrapins held the Rams to 33.9% shooting from the field and 13.3% (2-15) from three-point range. Leading the way for Maryland was Melo Trimble who had 17 points, 6 rebound, 4 assists, and 3 steals. On the season, the Terrapins have been led by Melo Trimble (16.2 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 4.2 apg), Jake Layman (12.6 ppg, 6.0 rpg), Robert Carter (12.2 ppg, 6.8 rpg), and Rasheed Sulaimon (12.2 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.6 apg). Offensively, Maryland is averaging 76.6 ppg on 52.3% shooting. The Terrapins average 7.0 three-pointers per game and have and assist/turnover margin of 0.97. Defensively, Maryland is holding their opponents to an average of 62.8 ppg on 40.2% shooting. The Terrapins have a rebound margin of 5.8 and average 5.4 blocks per game.
The Vikings are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games following a S.U. loss however, are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 road games. The Terrapins are 16-5-1 ATS in their last 22 Saturday games and 9-4-1 ATS in their last 14 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record.
Cleveland State lost their top two players last year’s 19-15 team and although they are playing well defensively, they’ve really struggled finding ways to put points on the board. Maryland is one of the best teams in the country and is loaded with start talent led by their point guard, Melo Trimble. Cleveland State will need to play well defensively to keep this one close, but after seeing Maryland shoot 60.0% from the field against a good defensive team in Rhode Island, I think Maryland will dominate on both sides of the ball in this one and cover this large spread. Take Maryland to cover.
