The Louisiana Monroe Warhawks improved to 3-2 (0-0 Sun Belt) on the season after defeating the Chattanooga Mocs, 64-54, this past Monday night. Louisiana Monroe used a strong defensive effort in the first half holding Chattanooga to just 20 points and never allowed the Mocs to take a lead in the 2nd half in the victory. Louisiana Monroe shot 41.5% from the field and although they shot just 14.3% (2-14) from three-point range, they were solid at the FT line hitting 18 of 23 free-throws. The Warhawks held the Mocs to just 35.3% shooting from the field and outrebounded Chattanooga by a 36-33 margin. Leading the way for Louisiana Monroe was Majok Deng who had 22 points and 6 rebounds. On the season, the Warhawks have been led by Majok Deng (16.0 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 1.6 apg), Travis Munnings (12.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg), and James Roberson (8.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 3.4 apg, 2.4 spg). The Ragin’ Cajuns are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 vs. Sun Belt opponents and 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 road games. The Warhawks are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games however, just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
Louisiana Lafayette should be one of the best teams in the Sun Belt this season as they returned the majority of their leaders from last year’s 22 win team including Shawn Long who is probably the best player in the Sun Belt. Louisiana Monroe should also be near or at the top of the Sun Belt by the end of this season as they have one of the best defenses in the country. This will an interesting battle as the Ragin’ Cajuns high-scoring offensive will be trying to put up points against the Warhawks defense that currently is holding teams to just 37.7% shooting. Louisiana Monroe just beat a very good team in the Chattanooga Mocs at home and as they have Majok Deng to put up against Shawn Long, I think the Warhawks defense does enough in this one to get them the win. Take Louisiana Monroe and the points.
