The Western Illinois Leathernecks lost their 4th straight game and dropped to 7-6 (0-2 Summit) on the season after being defeated by the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 63-59, this Sunday. Western Illinois was able to go into halftime with a 32-27 lead but struggled offensively in the 2nd half and couldn’t hang on for the win after scoring only five points in the last five minutes of the game. Western Illinois shot 41.5% from the field and 25.05 (3-12) from beyond the arc in the loss. The Leathernecks held the Jackrabbits to just 33.3% shooting but lost was only able to force South Dakota State into committing 6 turnovers. Leading the way for Western Illinois was Garret Covington who had 20 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block. On the season, the Leathernecks have been led by Garret Covington (17.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.2 apg), J.C. Fuller (15.7 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.8 apg), and Tate Stensgaard (9.0 ppg, 5.4 rpg). Offensively, Western Illinois is averaging 73.5 ppg on 45.8% shooting from the field and 42.1% shooting from beyond the arc. The Leathernecks average 7.8 three-pointer per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.34. Defensively, Western Illinois is holding their opponents to an average of 67.3 ppg on 39.2% shooting from the field. The Leathernecks have a rebound margin of 1.4 and average 3.9 blocks per game.
The Jaguars are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. Summit opponents and 13-6 ATS in their last 19 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. The Leathernecks are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 home games following three or more consecutive road games however just 7-19 ATS in their last 26 Saturday games.
IUPUI got a huge home win against South Dakota State and has started to look better over their last three games after back to back 30+ point losses against Memphis and Butler. Western Illinois had a tough road stretch over the past couple of weeks but have to still feel confident losing by a combined 6 points in their last two games against two of the Summit favorites in Omaha and South Dakota State. IUPUI is playing well but this is still a team that can struggle to score the ball on the road averaging just 63 ppg in their last five away games. I think Western Illinois will play well in their first home game in a while and that their defensive will allow them to get the win and cover this spread. Take Western Illinois to cover.
