The Youngstown State Penguins look for the upset of the Valparaiso Crusaders Monday.
If you follow Youngstown State you probably knew they are rebuilding and it would take awhile to become competitive and that’s what we’re seeing. The Penguins fell to 7-12 and 2-4 in the Horizon following an 81-45 defeat at Wright State Saturday. YSU fell behind by 17 points and were unable to score with the Raiders or get stops with Wright State sinking shots at 49% while countering with 28.8% which was obviously the difference. Cameron Morse was the Penguins lone double digit scorer with 18 points on 6-14 from the floor but eleven others managed just 27 points between them.
USA TODAY Sports
The Valparaiso Crusaders have the best combination of scoring and defense in the Horizon which has translated in to plenty of success. The Crusaders had no problems in dispatching Green Bay 85-70 Saturday to up their conference record to 5-0. Valpo led by five heading to the locker room before slowly pulling away but hit plenty of shots and defended well. The Phoenix were held to a mere 32% and were 7-24 from long range while the Crusaders fired away at over 48% with nine more free throws. Alec Peters paced the Valpo offense with 21 points and 13 rebounds on 6-10 with Vashil Fernandez adding 13 points and eleven boards. Shane Hammink was next in line with 12 points while Darien Walker chipped in with ten points and another nine pulls.
The under is 10-2 in Valparaiso last 12 vs. Horizon League and the Crusaders are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 Monday games while going 14-6-1 ATS in their last 21 road games. Youngstown State are 6-16 ATS in their last 22 home games and the over is 7-3 in their last 10 overall. I don’t like the road chalk but if Valpo plays as they have I like them…
