The Illinois State Redbirds lost their 3rd consecutive game and dropped to 9-10 (3-3 MVC) on the season after being defeated by the Evansville Purple Aces, 66-55, this past Friday. Illinois State did a great job on the glass which included getting 20 offensive rebounds, but didn’t do much with the extra opportunities as the Redbirds shot just 30.7% from the field and 19.4% (6-31) from beyond the arc. The Redbirds allowed the Purple Aces to shoot 50.0% from the field and 41.7% (5-12) from beyond the arc. Illinois State outrebounded Evansville by a 44-35 margin and won the turnover battle by a 16-14 margin in the loss. The Bradley Braves dropped to 3-16 (1-5 MVC) on the season after being defeated by the Missouri State Bears, 61-42, this past Saturday. Bradley once again struggled offensively and couldn’t put up much of a run in the 2nd half after falling behind 34-18 at halftime. Bradley shot just 26.8% from the field and 22.2% (4-18) from beyond the arc. The Braves allowed the Bears to shoot 41.2% from the field and was outrebounded by Missouri State by a 39-31 margin. The Redbirds are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 Wednesday games. The Braves are 20-41-2 ATS in their last 63 vs. MVC opponents and 17-35-1 ATS in their last 53 games overall.
Illinois State was expected to contend for the MVC crown this season but due to struggles on the offensive end, has had a disappointing season to date. Bradley got a surprising win on the road last week at Loyola (CHI) but this is still one of the worst offensive teams in the country and has lost by an average of 27 ppg in their five conference losses this season. Outside of their poor shooting, I did like how the Redbirds played against Evansville and as I think the Braves will struggle against the Redbirds defense, I think the Illinois State will be able to cover this mid-ragne spread. Take Illinois State to cover.
