The Manhattan Jaspers look to slow down the hot Monmouth Hawks in MAAC action.
I don’t know if many expected the Monmouth Hawks to be 14-4 at this point in the season but the team has been rolling behind a big offense. The Hawks have reeled off five straight conference victories after downing Siena 85-69 with a five point bulge at the break before pulling away over the final 20 minutes. The Hawks allowed 40% shooting and forced 20 turnovers while countering with 47% marksmanship which added up to six more field goals. Justin Robinson poured in a game high 23 points on 11-19 from the field with Deon Jones tossing in 21 points while Je’Lon Hornbeak chipped in with ten points.

The Manhattan Jaspers 7-10 record tells us this isn’t the same team we have come to know the last few years although they have been holding their own in the MAAC with a 4-2 record following a 69-65 victory versus visiting Niagara on Sunday as a seven point favorite. The Jaspers made an eight point lead at the half stand up with 45.8% shooting and seven more looks at the basket holding off the 48.8% shooting Purple Eagles with a 9-2 edge on long balls being decisive. Shane Richards paced the attack with 22 points on 5-9 from the floor with RaShawn Stores netting 15 points. Rich Williams and Zane Waterman scored 12 points apiece and combined for ten boards in a balanced attack.
Monmouth are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 road games. Monmouth has to be the surprise team in the MAAC and have played several big names tough. Manhattan lost some pieces but are still very dangerous but if the Hawks continue to perform as they have I will back them…
