The William & Mary Tribe had their four game winning streak snapped and fell to 12-5 (4-2 CAA) on the season after being defeated by the UNC Wilmington Seahawks, 97-94 in OT, this past Saturday. In a high scoring affair, William & Mary had trouble containing Denzel Ingram of the Seahawks in OT, and didn’t have much of an opportunity in the closing seconds to get up a three-pointer to send the game to double-OT. William & Mary shot 49.3% from the field and 36.4% (8-22) from beyond the arc in the loss. The Tribe allowed the Seahawks to shoot 54.1% from the field and 48.1% (13-27) from three-point range. Leading the way for William & Mary was David Cohn who had a double-double with 14 points, 11 assists, 3 rebounds, and 4 steals. On the season, the Tribe have been led by Omar Prewitt (17.2 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 2.6 apg), Daniel Dixon (14.3 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 1.6 apg), and Terry Tarpey (10.4 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 2.4 apg, 2.8 spg, 1.4 bpg). Offensively, William & Mary is averaging 75.9 ppg on 48.3% shooting from the field and 37.0% shooting from beyond the arc. The Tribe is averaging 7.4 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.37. Defensively, William & Mary is holding their opponents to an average of 68.6 ppg on 40.6% shooting. The Tribe average 5.4 blocks per game and have a turnover margin of -0.8.
The Phoenix are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games however, just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games vs. CAA opponents. The Tribe are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
Elon has probably been the biggest surprise of the CAA so far this season as although the Phoenix lost many of their top-scorers from last year’s 15 win squad, Elon still is using its fast-paced offensive to put points up on the board. William & Mary has been one of the better CAA teams over the past few years and although they lost Marcus Thornton who is currently playing for the Houston Rockets, they still have one of the better all-around players in the CAA in Terry Tarpey. Elon has shown they can win on the road with their big win over James Madison earlier this season and as the Phoenix have been keeping games close in conference play, I’m going to go with Elon to cover with the points in this one. Take Elon to cover.
