The Chattanooga Mocs won their 5th straight game and improved to 18-3 (7-1 Southern) on the season after defeating the Samford Bulldogs, 63-56, this past Saturday. Chattanooga used an 11-2 run midway through the 2nd half to take control of the contest and was able to hold off a late Bulldogs charge to secure the win. Chattanooga struggled offensively in the victory as the Mocs shot just 35.6% from the field and 16.7% (3-18) from beyond the arc. The Mocs allowed the Bulldogs to shoot 44.9% from the field and outrebounded Samford by a 43-32 margin. Leading the way for Chattanooga was Tre’ McLean who had a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals, and a block. On the season, the Mocs have been led by Casey Jones (12.6 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 3.9 apg), Justin Tuoyo (11.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 1.2 apg), and Tre’ McLean (11.0 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.7 spg). Offensively, Chattanooga has been led by 76.4 ppg on 46.9% shooting from the field and 38.6% shooting from beyond the arc. The Mocs average 8.2 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.25. Defensively, Chattanooga is holding their opponents to an average of 66.8 ppg on 43.7% shooting. The Mocs have a rebound margin of 4.1 and a turnover margin of 2.1.
The Bulldogs are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 Monday games and 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games following a ATS loss. The Mocs are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 vs. Southern opponents.
Citadel lost their top three scorers from last year’s team but hasn’t had issue finding offense as the Bulldogs leads the country in scoring offensive due to their up-tempo style of play. Chattanooga has been outstanding this season and is clear conference favorites as this point in the season in the Southern Conference. Although the Bulldogs can put up points on the board, they allowed over 90.0 ppg and as the Mocs have one of the better defenses in the conference, I think Chattanooga will be able to slow down the Bulldogs and score enough to cover this large spread. Take Chattanooga to cover.
