Southern Illinois allowed Northern Iowa to use a 12-4 run at the end of the 1st half to take the game at 29 all at halftime and couldn’t get much going on the offensive end in the 2nd half which allowed the Panthers to get the win. Southern Illinois shot just 38.7% from the field and 22.2% (4-18) from beyond the arc. The Wichita State Shockers won their 11th straight game and improved to 16-5 (10-0 MVC) on the season after defeating the Evansville Purple Aces, 78-65, this past Sunday. Wichita State used a strong defensive 1st half to gain a 32-21 halftime lead and got all the offensive they needed from Fred VanVleet in the victory. Wichita State shot 38.7% from the field and 88.9% (24-27) from the FT line. The Shockers held the Purple Aces to 34.8% shooting from the field and outrebounded Evansville by a 43-35 margin. Leading the way for Wichita State was Fred VanVleet who had 32 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. On the season, the Shockers have been led by Ron Baker (14.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.2 apg, 1.8 spg), Fred VanVleet (13.4 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 5.3 apg, 1.8 spg), and Anton Grady (6.9 ppg, 5.0 rpg). The Salukis are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 road games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Wednesday games. The Shockers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 home game.
Southern Illinois has been a great story this season as the Saluki’s have already picked up 18 wins this season after coming of a 12-21 campaign last season which included just 4 MVC wins. Wichita State has been dominating everyone in the MVC this season and have the best duo in the conference in Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet. Southern Illinois has been good on the offensive end but was only able to put up 58 points against the Shockers in a 25-point loss at home in early January, and with how the Shockers are playing at the moment, I’m not going against them. Take Wichita State to cover this big spread at home.
