The Rice Owls look for a road win at the Charlotte 49ers in CUSA action on Thursday night.
The Rice Owls are just looking to stay out of the CUSA basement but their struggles can directly be related to a defense that allows over 80 points. The Owls have won two of three but so much more is needed and time is short. The Owls are coming off of a 72-65 versus visiting Southern Miss as a 7.5 point favorite behind a late surge. The Golden Eagles held a slight 45%-44% shooting edge but Rice sank ten more free throws to win it. Marcus Evans led the Rice offense with a game high 23 points and five steals with Egor Koulechov adding with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Four others scored between 6-7 points in a very balanced and productive attack.

The Charlotte 49ers are fighting to reach the middle of the conference standings but like I said about Rice, time is not on their side. The 49ers have been outscored 80-75 which has hurt the team over the long haul. Having said that the offense stalled in a 74-69, overtime loss to visiting Old Dominion with the Monarchs connecting at 46% while Charlotte countered at 39% for a difference of eight baskets that negated eight more free throws. Joseph Uchebo paced the attack with 19 points and a game high 19 points on 7-12while Braxton Ogbueze, Jon Davis and Curran Scott netted 15 points apiece. The rest of the team scored a combined six points but a 5-16 mark from distance hurt.
The over is 16-5 in Rice last 21 vs. Conference USA and is 22-7 in their last 29 overall while going 10-4 in their last 14 road games. Charlotte are 11-2 ATS in their last 13 games overall and the over is 20-7 in their last 27 vs. Conference USA. I think the 49ers are better then their record even though I prefer them as a dog…
