The top-ranked Villanova Wildcats will travel to the BMO Harris Bradley Center to take on the Marquette Golden Eagles this Saturday afternoon in College Basketball action.
The Villanova Wildcats has their seven game winning streak snapped and dropped to 24-4 (13-2 Big East) on the season after being defeated by the 5th ranked Xavier Musketeers, 90-83, this past Wednesday. Villanova trailed for the majority of the matchup as their normally strong defense couldn’t get enough stops against the efficient Musketeers offense. Villanova shot 44.8% from the field and was outrebounded by Xavier by a 42-33 margin in the loss. The Wildcats allowed the Musketeers to shoot 50.0% from the field and 38.9% (7-18) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Villanova was Kris Jenkins who had 22 points and 3 rebounds. On the season, the Wildcats have been led by Josh Hart (15.0 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 1.8 apg), Ryan Arcidiacono (11.9 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 4.4 apg, 1.3 spg), and Daniel Ochefu (10.4 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 1.7 bpg). Offensviely, Villanova is averaging 76.3 ppg on 46.1% shooting from the field and 32.8% shooting form beyond the arc. The Wildcats are the best FT shooting team in the country, hitting 78.2% of their FT’s. Defensively, Villanova is holding their opponents to average of 62.5 ppg on 38.9% shooting.

The Marquette Golden Eagles won their second straight game and improved to 18-10 (7-8 Big East) on the season after defeating the Creighton Blue Jays, 66-61, this past Wednesday. Marquette held a 39-29 lead at halftime and although Creighton was able to fight back to tie the game at 56 all with just under five minutes left to play, the Golden Eagles was able to get some key baskets by star Freshman, Henry Ellenson, late in the game to secure the win. Marquette shot 46.3% from the field and 35.3 (6-17) from beyond the arc in the victory. The Golden Eagles held the Blue Jays to 44.1% shooting from the field and just 14.3% (3-21) from three-point range. Leading the way for Marquette was Henry Ellenson who had a double-double with 22 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and a block. On the season, the Golden Eagles have been led by Henry Ellenson (16.7 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.6 bpg), Luke Fischer (12.3 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 1.6 bpg), and Duane Wilson (12.0 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.3 spg). Offensviely, Marquette is averaging 75.1 ppg on 46.2% shooting from the field and 34.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Defensively, the Golden Eagles are allowing their opponents to average 71.2 ppg on 40.7% shooting from the field.
The Wildcats are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up loss however, just 3-8 ATS in their last 11 vs. Big East opponents. The Golden Eagles are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 7-19 ATS in their last 26 home games.
Villanova didn’t have any answers on the defensive end against Xavier in their recent loss, however, the Wildcats are still one of the better defensive teams in the country as they rank 13th in the country in both scoring defense and defensive FG%. Marquette was able to pick up an impressive win at Creighton and have one of the best front-court duos on the country in Henry Ellenson and Luke Fisher. Marquette lost by an 83-68 margin at Villanova earlier this season, however, that game was actually a lot closer then what the final score ended up being. Villanova should have their hands full will Ellenson and Fischer and as the Wildcats can struggled shooting from beyond the arc, I think the Golden Eagles will continue their solid play and at least cover at home with the points. Take Marquette and the points.
