The Illinois State Redbirds was expected to be on the of top teams coming into the season and although the Redbirds struggled early, Illinois State finished the regular season with an 18-13 overall record and 12-6 conference record to earn the 3-seed in the MVC tournament. Illinois State was able to finish the regular season winning 9 of their last 12 games which included an impressive 58-53 victory at home against Wichita State. Leading the Redbirds on the season was DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell who averaged 14.1 ppg, 4.6 rpg, and 1.9 apg. Also contributing for Illinois State was Paris Lee (11.1 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1.7 spg), MiKyle McIntosh (10.7 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 1.8 apg), and Deontae Hawkins (10.5 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 1.1 apg). The Sycamores are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a ATS win however, just 1-8-1 ATS in their last 10 games overall. The Redbirds are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
Indiana State and Illinois State split their regular season series however, these teams seem to be heading in opposite directions at the moment. Indiana State has had trouble finding ways to score the basketball all season and have averaged just 61.4 ppg over their last five games. Illinois State is ranked 45th in the country in scoring defense and as I just don’t see Indiana State scoring more then 50-55 points in this one, I think Illinois State will be able to cover this mid-range spread. Take Illinois State to cover.
