The Loyola Marymount Lions won their opening round match up with San Diego 64-61 in the Big West playoffs and their reward is facing top seed Saint Mary’s in the quarterfinals. Shamar Johnson chipped in with eight points with four yanks as LMU survived the slowdown methods of San Diego.

The Saint Mary’s Gaels were kings of the always top heavy West Coast with a hefty 15-3 record which technically tied them with Gonzaga but they defeated the Bulldogs twice. Overall the Gaels were 24-4 with plenty of firepower in all areas as they averaged 75 points on a nation’s best 50.9% while allowing 60 points which was 5th. SMC closed the regular season with eight straight victories where the defense was the most consistent and responsible for the majority of their success. The offense was balanced with Emmett Naar leading the way at 14 points on 50.5% while hitting threes at 48.6%. Calvin Hermanson was next in line at nearly 12 points while Dane Pineau and Joe Rahon averaged over ten points with Pineau hauling in a team high eight rebounds.
