The McNeese State Cowboys lock horns with the Nicholls State Colonels in a Southland opener.
The Nicholls State Colonels were 10th in the Southland and finished at 10-22 overall. Like many teams with a losing record the Colonels struggled to get both ends of the floor on the same page as they were outscored 77-67 with opponents sinking 45% of their looks. Even though Nicholls finished in the bottom half of the Southland there might be some momentum on their side with three consecutive victories to conclude the regular season. Having the defense come through would be a huge lift but the offense still needs more punch with Ja’Dante’ Frye and TJ Carpenter netting 12 points each and combined over ten boards but 8+ point scorers Liam Carpenter and Jonathan Bell are the two that need to increase their output on the scoreboard.

The McNeese State Cowboys were near the middle of the Southland at 7-11 but were 9-19 overall and had problems in their non conference schedule as well. The Cowboys were okay offensively at 71 points on 41% but had their share of issues at the defensive end with almost 79 points given up on 46% which was near the bottom of the national rankings. The Cowboys won three straight to close the year where their scoring and ‘D’ were better then their season averages. The bottom line is the Cowboys need their defense to come through and take some of the load off the offense. However if McNeese is going to do anything in the playoffs leading scorer Jamaya Burr has to meet and hopefully exceed his 15 point average which can be said for 10+ point scorers James Harvey and Jarren Greenwood.
Nicholls State are 7-18 ATS in their last 26 games overall. I have looked at the numbers of both teams for quite awhile and I swear I could wear a blindfold and not tell the difference. Nicholls State did look better head to head but I can’t say that matters…
