The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats take the hardwood in a quarterfinal MEAC tilt versus the Savannah State Tigers Thursday.
The Savannah State Tigers advanced to the MEAC quarterfinals with an opening round 63-58 victory versus a stubborn Delaware State on Tuesday as a 6.5 point favorite. The Hornets seemed to be on their way to the upset with an eight point edge at the break before a 34-21 second half rally righted the ship. The Tigers won the shooting battle 49%-44% with four more makes at the line being crucial with 20 turnovers almost doing them in. Savannah State received 21 points from Chris Martin on 7-13 with Troyce Manassa tossing in 13 points. Lejo Kilo added ten points and 12 rebounds on 5-9 but production was difficult to come by outside of this trio.

The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats were something of an oddity with a 14-17 overall record but with a stellar 12-6 conference mark which landed them in 4th place. The Wildcats were outscored 73-71 but exceeded these numbers during the home stretch with wins in eight of ten where the ‘D’ was shutdown at times 61 points or less allowed in six of those contests. If the defensive end of the floor comes up big in the conference playoffs there is no reason the Wildcats can’t win. Jordan Potts tops the offense with 16 points with Mario Moody adding 13 points and seven boards. Ricky Johnson scored nearly eleven points with five others scoring between 4-8 points.
As happens many times in the MEAC the numbers are incredibly similar and with both teams hot down the stretch we have a virtual coin toss. I’m certainly glad my life doesn’t depend on this pick because I struggle to find an edge…
