The 7-seed Charlotte 49ers (14-18) was able to get up big in the 1st half and was able to hang on late to defeat the 10-seed Rice Owls, 79-69, on Wednesday night. The 49ers were able to get up by a 39-25 margin by halftime but had to use 18-8 run over the last six minutes of the game to secure the win after the Owls tied it up, 61-61, with 5:55 left to play. Charlotte was outstanding on the offensive end as they shot 46.4% from the field and 42.1% (8-19) from beyond the arc. The 49ers allowed the Owls to shoot 50.0% from the field however, held the Owls to just 11.1% (2-18) from three-point range. The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders ended their season on the a 3-game winning streak and earned the 2-seed in the C-USA Tournament after finishing the year with a 13-5 conference record and 21-9 overall record. Middle Tennessee was outstanding on the defensive end towards the end of the season as over their last six games, the Blue Raiders held their opponents to an average of 66.7 ppg. On the season, the Blue Raiders were led by Giddy Potts who averaged 15.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg, and 1.4 apg. Giddy Potts has missed his last three-game due to a concussion is still questionable for this matchup. Also contributing for the Blue Raiders has been Reggie Upshaw (13.5 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 2.1 apg, 1.5 spg), Darnell Harris (11.8 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.3 apg), and Perrin Buford (11.6 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 1.8 apg). Offensively, Middle Tennessee is averaging 72.2 ppg on 44.6% shooting from the field and 38.7% shooting from beyond the arc. The Blue Raiders average 8.1 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.12. Defensively, Middle Tennessee is holding their opponents to an average of 68.3 ppg on 43.0% shooting. The Blue Raiders have a rebound margin of 2.7 and a turnover margin of 1.5.
The 49ers are 12-3 ATS inthier last 15 games following a ATS win and 16-6 ATS inthier last 22 games overall. The Blue Raiders are 1-4 ATS in thier last 5 Thursday games and 1-6 ATS in thier last 7 games following a straight up win.
Middle Tennessee was able to defeat Charlotte in a close 73-72 matchup in mid-January at home in the only match between the two teams this season. Middle Tennessee is a solid defensive team but the real question will come down if the 329th ranked scoring defense of the 49ers will be able to slow down the Blue Raiders offense enough to keep this close. Charlotte has won 6 of the last 9 games and has picked it up defensively over their last 4 games enough that I’m initially leaning towards taking the 49ers as they should be getting a few points. Please check back for updates when the line is released.
Update (11:40 AM EST) - I would have like a couple more points here but still feeling good with Charlotte. I'm taking the 49ers and the points.
