The Nicholls State Colonels shoot for the upset of the Sam Houston State Bearkats in the quarterfinals of the Southland.
The Nicholls State Colonels defeated McNeese State 94-90 in double overtime to punch their ticket to the Southland quarterfinals. The Cowboys connected at less then 41% but stayed alive because of ten more looks at the basket. The Colonels sank shots at 47.5% and took advantage of the Cowboys misfires at the line late in the first OT. TJ Carpenter was the Colonels top scorer with 22 points and five yanks with Ja’Dante’ Frye netting 18 points off the bench. Liam Thomas was next in line with 16 points and eight rebounds while Jonathan Bell and Adam Ward scored eleven and eight points respectively.

The Sam Houston State Bearkats have been one of the top teams in the Southland for a number of years even though a 17-14 record says this might not be their best season. The Bearkats finished 4th with a 12-6 record and won five of seven down the stretch behind some overwhelming offense. The Bearkats outscored the opposition 75-72 but played well above those numbers during the stretch run so hopefully the time off isn’t going to steal away the momentum they were riding. Aurimas Majauskas led the offense with 14 points and 5.5 pulls on 56% marksmanship with Dakarai Henderson also scoring 14 but on just 37.5%. It was score by committee for the rest of the lineup with seven players scoring between 4-9 points.
My first thought is Nicholls State spent a lot of energy and emotion in their first round victory and Sam Houston State was probably thrilled. We’ll see if that benefits the Bearkats and makes the line a bit bigger so please check back when a line is released…
