The South Carolina State Bulldogs took a big first half lead before holding off a fierce Coppin State come back in a 90-80 quarterfinal victory as a 5.5 point favorite. The Bulldogs led by 16 at the half before a late Eagles charge fell short of the mark. The Eagles sank shots at around 42% with SCSU countering at over 49% for a crucial four extra baskets. Eric Eaves paced the Bulldogs offense with 21 points and eight boards with Tashombe Riley adding 18 points and eight rebounds. Greg Mortimer and Gabe McCray netted 13 points apiece with eight pulls while Ed Stephens chipped in with ten points.

The Norfolk State Spartans were red hot to end the regular season and carried that momentum in to the MEAC quarterfinals wit the result being a 66-47 rout of North Carolina Central as a six point favorite. The Spartans jumped to a 15 point lead after 20 minutes and the Eagles had no answers. NCCU never found the shooting touch at 33% with 18 turnovers to give the 40% shooting Spartans ten more looks at the basket that added up to seven more field goals. Jeffrey Short led the Spartans offense with16 points and six pulls with D’Shon Taylor adding 13 points and six boards. Charles Oliver and Zaynah Robinson combined for 18 points as the Spartans were somewhat balanced rather then explosive.
