The Texas A&M CC Islanders and the Sam Houston State Bearkats look to punch their ticket to the Southland finals.
The Sam Houston State Bearkats seemed to have a decided edge versus a Nicholls State club that had played two overtimes the night before but the Colonels took the fight to the Bearkats before dropping a 60-59 heartbreaker as a ten point underdog. SHSU seemed poised to pull away early but couldn’t shake feisty Nicholls State who held a 42%-39% edge in marksmanship in an otherwise dead even boxscore. The Bearkats received a game high 16 points and seven boards from Aurimas Majuskas with Torry Butler adding 12 points and ten rebounds. Jamal Williams and Dakarai Henderson combined for 18 points in a quiet offensive night.

The Texas A&M CC Islanders look to unseat Stephen F. Austin as the top dog in the Southland and their second place finish in the conference says they have a shot. The Islanders were an impressive 24-6 overall and 15-3 in the Southland as they were generally steady at both ends of the floor. Texas A&M CC outscored the opposition 74-68.5 and finished the regular season on a bit of a tear with six consecutive victories. This is not a squad that is known for blowing people out but rather depends on quality efforts at both ends of the floor. Rashawn Thomas is one of the best players in the conference at 17 points and eight boards with 73 blocks on the year and if he gets enough help from Hameed Ali, Bryce Douvier and Brandon Pyle who average 10-11 points we could see this team reach the finals where anything can happen.
The under is 8-2 in Sam Houston State last 10 vs. Southland and is 8-3 in their last 11 neutral site games. The Islanders will be slight favorites but probably will be facing a more prepared Bearkats squad…
