The Line: St. Mary's Gaels -12 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
The #23 Saint Mary’s Gaels butt heads with the New Mexico State Aggies in an NIT opener.
The New Mexico Aggies were supposed to be the king of the WAC as in previous seasons and were during the regular season. A three at the buzzer in the conference championship did them in and the surefire NCAA squad is now in the NIT. The Aggies are an average scoring team at almost 72 points at 46.6% shooting which means they don’t run and gun. This team really excels defensively at 63 points scored on less then 39% which is #16 overall and their success will depend on adequate scoring if their ‘D’ comes through. The Aggies need Pascal Siakim to continue to do it all at 20 points and 11.5 rebounds with Ian Baker adding nearly 14 points to provide some solid scoring.

The Saint Mary’s Gaels are in an unusual position in that they won the West Coast regular season title but lost the conference postseason and were left out in the cold which says the league didn’t carry as much weight as in previous seasons. The Gaels were able to do it all and were good at it. SMC averaged 75 points on a nation’s best 50.9% marksmanship while their number five defense allowed just 61 points. On paper the Gaels have the ‘D’ to compete with anybody and if that happens then the question is where will the points come from. Emmett Naar is the top weapon at 14 points with eleven point scorers Calvin Hermanson, Dane Pineau and Joe Rahon giving the team production from very good shooters.
The under is 9-3 in New Mexico State last 12 road games and is 19-7 in their last 26 non-conference games while going 23-9 in their last 32 overall. The over is 8-2 in Saint Mary’s last 10 vs. Western Athletic and the Gaels are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 home games while going 11-4 ATS in their last 15 Tuesday games. No line is out but the question is how much Saint Mary’s will be favored…
