The Stony Brook Seawolves and Kentucky Wildcats will face off on Thursday night in the opening round of the East Region at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Stony Brook got a monster game by Jameel Warney to defeat the Vermont Catamounts to win the America East conference and earn a 13-seed for the NCAA Tournament. Stony Brook was one of the rare 1-seeds to win their conference tournament this season and have one of the best unknown players in the country in Jameel Warney who had 43 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks against Vermont in the American East finals. On the season, the Seawolves have been led by Jameel Warney (19.8 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 1.6 apg, 3.0 bpg), Carson Puriefoy (15.1 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 3.1 apg, 1.3 spg), and Ahmad Walker (10.4 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 4.2 apg, 1.0 spg). Offensively, Stony Brook is averaging 76.8 ppg on 47.6% shooting from the field and 37.2% shooting from beyond the arc. The Seawolves average 6.8 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.45. Defensively, Stony Brook is holding their opponents to an average of 63.4 ppg on 40.4% shooting. The Seawolves have a rebound margin of 7.9 and a turnover margin of 1.4.
USA TODAY Sports
The Kentucky Wildcats was able to win the SEC Championship after defeating the Texas A&M Aggies, 82-77 in OT, and earned a 4-seed for the NCAA Tournament. Kentucky was once again projected to be one of the top teams in the country and although the Wildcats struggled at time throughout the season, Kentucky has started to look like one of the more dangerous teams during their recent five game win streak. On the season, Kentucky has been led by Jamal Murray (20.2 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.0 spg), Tyler Ulis (16.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 7.2 apg, 1.4 spg), and Alex Poythress (10.3 ppg, 6.1 rpg). Offensively, Kentucky is averaging 79.7 ppg on 47.9% shooting from the field and 37.0% shooting from beyond the arc. The Wildcats average 6.9 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.30. Defensively, Kentucky is holding their opponents to an average of 68.3 ppg on 40.0% shooting. The Wildcats have a rebound margin of 5.4 and average 5.6 blocks per game.
Stony Brook was the best team in the American East this season and although they are one of the better statistical teams with a prime-time player in Jameel Warney, the Seawolves have not seen a team as talented as the Kentucky Wildcats all season. Kentucky enters this contest ranked 25th and FG% and 31st in defensive FG% and as long as they slow down Jameel Warney, I don’t see Stony Brook being able to keep up with the Wildcats in this one. I’m taking Kentucky to cover this large spread.
