The Iowa State Cyclones butt heads the Virginia Cavaliers in a Sweet 16 match up.
The Iowa State Cyclones are alive and well in the NCAA after surviving the slowdown attempts by Arkansas-Little Rock. The Cyclones are heading to the Sweet 16 after downing the Trojans 78-61 behind an early lead that got bigger and bigger. ISU led by 12 at the half and slowly grew it over the final 20 minutes behind torrid 56.6% shooting that added up to ten more field goals. Georges Niang paced the Iowa State attack with a game high 28 points and six pulls on 11-18 from the floor with Matt Thomas netting 16 points on 6-10 including a 4-8 performance from distance. Abdel Nader tossed in eleven points on 5-8 while Deonte Burton and Monte Morris each scored eight points.

The Virginia Cavaliers have been riding their defense to success but received a boost from their scoring to defeat the Butler Bulldogs 77-69 and advance to Sweet 16. The Cavaliers overcame a two deficit after 20 minutes with a 54-44 second half carrying the day. The Bulldogs stayed competitive on 44.6% marksmanship but the Cavs 57% accuracy and five more free throws eventually won out. Malcolm Brogdon gave Virginia 22 points, five yanks and five assists with Anthony Gill adding 19 points and seven boards on 7-9 from the floor. Marial Shayok tossed in 12 points while Mike Tobey and London Perrantes combined for 18 points.
These teams are polar opposites and the pace will be the deciding factor. Iowa State will try to turn this in to a track meet while Virginia will look to slow things down and control the scoreboard with defense. For now I’ll do with defense…
