The Columbia Lions look to be unpleasant hosts when the New Jersey Tech Highlanders visit in a CIT semifinal bout.
The Columbia Lions and the postseason are never mentioned with the Ivy League basket ball success limited to Harvard, Princeton and Yale this year. The Lions are out to change this perception after reaching the CIT semifinals with a 69-67 victory versus a pesky Ball State as a seven point favorite. The Cardinals fired away 52% for seven more field goals versus the 40.8% shooting Lions but Columbia won this at the stripe with 13 more makes. Alex Rosenberg paced the Lions attack with 18 points and seven boards with Maodo Lo tossing in 16 points on 6-15 with five bombs. Grant Mullins added 14 points and seven boards while Jeff Coby chipped in with nine points and six pulls.

I have already said that the New Jersey Tech Highlanders are one of the least known of the teams in the postseason although they are becoming more visible with each win. The Highlanders erased a four point deficit at the break with a 37-30 second half to win outright as a four point home dog in a 63-60 win versus Texas Arlington. Defense was the name of the game with NJIT holding a slight 40%-37% edge in marksmanship with an 11-25 mark from long range and four more free throws overcoming five more Mavericks field goals. The Highlanders received 14 points from Ky Howard with Tim Coleman adding 12 points and eight rebounds. Damon Lynn netted eleven points while Rob Ukawuba and Terrence Smith combined for 18 points and eleven rebounds.
New Jersey Tech was third in the Atlantic Sun and that’s not too shabby for a top heavy conference. The exact same thing could be said of Columbia but for me I don’t see a world of difference here even though the Lions won this match up by nine back in December….
