The Portland State Vikings will look to shake up the PAC-12 when they take on the Arizona State Sun Devils on opening night.
The Portland State Vikings look to shake off a disappointing 2015-16 campaign where they finished 13-18 including 8-10 in conference play which left the Vikes in 8th heading into the Big Sky conference tournament where they were bounced by top seed and eventual tournament champion Weber State by a narrow 78-74 scoreline. The horizon for head coach Tyler Geving looks like things will get more difficult before they get easier as Portland State lost it’s top pair of leading scorers from last season. Cameron Forte, who led the Vikes with 19.2 points per game and 9.3 rebounds graduated, while sophomore guard Isaiah Pineiro took his 12 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and transferred to the University of San Diego, which may have something to do with Portland State’s 8th-place finish in the Big Sky preseason poll.

The Arizona State Sun Devils look to improve on their own disappointing 2015-16 season which saw ASU finish 15-17, including 5-11 in conference play to finish 11th in the PAC-12. ASU ended up being knocked out in the first round by a 75-66 final at the hands of the 6th seed Oregon State Beavers. Head coach Bobby Hurley looks to have more success in his 2nd season than he did in his debut year as ASU were able to land a trio of 4-star recruits en route to landing the #23 recruiting class for this season, according to ESPN. Hurley will retain the services of junior guard Tra Holder for another season, as Holder led the Sun Devils with 14.2 points per game and 3.7 assists last season. However 3 key parts of the ASU squad finished their careers as guard Gerry Blakes and forwards Willie Atwood and Eric Jacobsen all graduated. The Sun Devils will no doubt be out to prove that they are better than the 11th place position of the PAC-12 preseason poll.
Portland State is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall while the over is 10-1 in their last 11 games overall. Arizona State is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 overall and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 vs. Big Sky while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 home games.
ASU has struggled against the Big Sky in recent years, however this Portland State squad is depleted after losing their top duo of Forte and Pineiro. ASU has a few new toys that they’ll surely want to show off not to mention the best player on the floor in Tra Holder. While the line may be steep, this should be a game where the Sun Devils put it away early.
Lay the points with Arizona State.
