The UT San Antonio Roadrunners and Fresno State Bulldogs open the 2016-17 college basketball season Friday night at the Save Mart Center.
The UT San Antonio Roadrunners won just five games last season and now have a new head coach in former Oklahoma assistant, Steve Henson. Christian Wilson returns after averaging 16.8 points and 4.6 assists while J.R. Harris averaged 11.9 points and 2.5 rebounds. Gino Littles dished 3.3 assists per game and Lucas O'Brien grabbed 3.6 rebounds per game. UT San Antonio lost its best player in Ryan Bowie but does return a lot of guys who produced last season and has a decent core to build around. The interesting thing with the UT San Antonio Roadrunners will be how Henson handles his first head coaching job after being an assistant forever. The UT San Antonio Roadrunners have lost 11 straight road games.

The Fresno State Bulldogs have increased expectations after winning 25 games and reaching the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Karachi Edo returns after averaging 10.1 points and 6.3 rebounds while Cullen Russo averaged 7.8 points and six rebounds. Paul Watson grabbed 3.2 rebounds per game and Jahmel Taylor shot 41.5 percent from the field. Fresno State lost a lot of production from a year ago, including two of its three double-digit scorers in Marvelle Harris and Torren Jones. However, Edo will be one of the better players in the MWC and Colorado transfer Jaron Hopkins can fill it up. The Fresno State Bulldogs will once again be a sleeper this season. The Fresno State Bulldogs have won eight straight home games.
The Roadrunners are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 Friday games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games. The Bulldogs are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 home games and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The over is 6-1 in Bulldogs last 7 overall and the under is 4-1 in Roadrunners last 5 overall.
Fresno State finished last season on a strong note and was able to sneak into the big dance. UTSA was absolute garbage and deserves to be a big underdog based on ho things played out. However, this isn't the same Fresno State team from last year and it's going to take some time to find some depth around Edo. I'll take my chances with the Roadrunners and the points here.
