The Ohio State Buckeyes and Navy Midshipmen open the 2016-17 college basketball season Friday night at the Alumni Hall on CBS Sports Network.
The Ohio State Buckeyes hope for a bounce back season after finishing 24-11 last season and getting to the second round of the NIT. Marc Loving returns after averaging 14 points and 5.3 rebounds while Keita Bates-Diop averaged 11.8 points and 6.4 rebounds. Jae'Sean Tate is another double-digit scorer and JaQuan Lyle averaged 4.2 assists per game. Ohio State returns its top-six scorers from last season, which includes four double-digit scorers, so the Buckeyes have a legit chance to compete in the deep Big Ten this season. However, consistency is going to be big for the Ohio State Buckeyes, as they were so up and down last season. The Ohio State Buckeyes have lost five of their last eight road games.

The Navy Midshipmen are coming off their best season under coach Ed DeChellis with 19 victories and hope they can take another step forward. Shawn Anderson returns after averaging 13.2 points and four rebounds while Tim Abruzzo averaged 6.6 points and 3.3 rebounds. Tom Lacey grabbed 4.2 rebounds per game and Zach Fong shot 32.6 percent from the field. Navy does lose a ton of production from a year ago but does have a roster made up of five seniors and return its best player in Anderson, who shot nearly 50 percent from the field. The Navy Midshipmen are certainly going to have some growing pains with a new roster but an opening game against Ohio State will be a big early test. The Navy Midshipmen have lost six of their last seven home games.
The Buckeyes are 7-21-1 ATS in their last 29 road games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Midshipmen are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The under is 14-6 in Midshipmen last 20 overall and the under is 6-2 in Buckeyes last 8 non-conference games.
This is a lot of points to lay in the opening game of the season which is a true road game for Ohio State. However, Navy simply doesn't have the talent to compete with the Buckeyes, an Ohio State club that's experienced and deep for a change. Ohio State has a legit chance to compete for a Big Ten title this season. Navy is likely in over its head here.
