The Dartmouth Big Green and Rhode Island Rams open the 2016-17 college basketball season Friday night at the Ryan Center.
The Dartmouth Big Green hope for a bounce back season after winning just 10 games last season, and they have a new coach in David McLaughlin. Evan Boudreaux returns after averaging 17.7 points and 9.4 rebounds while Miles Wright averaged 11.2 points and 4.4 rebounds. Taylor Johnson dished 1.4 assists per game and Guilien Smith grabbed 1.3 rebounds per game. Dartmouth has the experience and the talent to be a force in the Ivy League this season, especially with a double-double machine in Boudreaux leading the way. The issue for the Big Green is with the coaching staff, as McLaughlin hasn’t been a head coach in a few years and is new to the team coming over from Northeastern. The Dartmouth Big Green have lost 10 of their last 11 road games.

The Rhode Island Rams hope to take a major step forward in the fifth season under coach Dan Hurley. Jared Terrell returns after averaging 13.6 points and 2.6 assists while Jarvis Garrett averaged 12.5 points and 3.7 rebounds. Hassan Martin was a third double-digit scorer and Kuran Iverson grabbed 7.1 rebounds per game. Rhode Island returns majority of its key production from last season and that doesn’t even include possibly the best player in the A-10 in E.C. Matthews. The Rhode Island Rams are loaded and are a good bet to make their first NCAA Tournament since the 1998-99 season. I’m very high on Rhode Island this season as long as the team can stay healthy. The Rhode Island Rams have won nine of their last 11 home games.
The Big Green are 15-35-1 ATS in their last 51 non-conference games and 3-12 ATS in their last 15 Friday games. The Rams are 3-0-2 ATS in their last 5 Friday games and 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The under is 4-1 in Rams last 5 overall and the over is 3-0-1 in Big Green last 4 overall.
I'm very high on the Rhode Island Rams this season, as they return majority of their roster from last year and get back probably the best player in the A-10 back from injury. Expect Rhode Island to do some damage and it's going to start with a blowout win over Dartmouth. The Big Green will need time adjusting to a new coaching staff and simply lack the depth to hang with this exciting Rhode Island team.
