The Virginia Cavaliers and UNC Greensboro Spartans open the 2016-17 college basketball season Friday night at the Greensboro Coliseum on ESPN3.
The Virginia Cavaliers have become one of the more consistent teams in college basketball and hope to make the NCAA Tournament for a fourth straight season. London Perrantes returns after averaging 11 points and 4.4 assists while Isaiah Wilkins averaged 4.6 points and 4.1 rebounds. Devon Hall dished two assists per game and Marial Shayok grabbed 1.9 rebounds per game. The Virginia Cavaliers have some rebuilding to do with no more Malcolm Brogdon and Anthony Gill. Still, Tony Bennett is one of the top coaches in the country and Virginia will continue to be great defensively. Virginia also has a loaded recruiting class led by Kyle Guy, Jay Huff and Ty Jerome. The Virginia Cavaliers have split their last 10 road games.

The UNC Greensboro Spartans look to build on last years 15 victories that led to the CBI Quarterfinals. Francis Alonso returns after averaging 13 points and 1.8 assists while R.J. White averaged 12.2 points and 6.9 rebounds. Diante Baldwin was a third double-digit scorer and Marvin Smith grabbed 5.5 rebounds per game. UNC Greensboro returns majority of its roster from last year with the only key loss being Kayel Locke. Making a run in the CBI last season will certainly pay off this year for the UNC Greensboro Spartans, and this is a more experienced team with seven upperclassmen leading the way. UNC Greensboro has a chance to make some noise this season in the Southern. The UNC Greensboro Spartans have won five of their last six home games.
The Cavaliers are 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games and 11-3-1 ATS in their last 15 games overall. The Spartans are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The under is 4-1 in Spartans last 5 overall and the under is 12-5 in Cavaliers last 17 overall.
Virginia isn't going anywhere thanks to a great defensive system and one of its best recruiting classes in quite some time. However, the Cavs still lost a lot of key guys and will be a work in progress before becoming championship contenders towards the end of the season. The UNC Greensboro Spartans are experienced and have a handful of guys who can give you doulbe-digit points. With this being a true home game, I'll give UNC Greensboro and the points a chance here.
