The South Alabama Jaguars and UNLV Rebels open the 2016-17 college basketball season Friday night at the Thomas & Mack Center.
The South Alabama Jaguars hope to build on last years 14 wins after improving their record each year under coach Matthew Graves. Ken Williams returns after averaging 15.5 points and 3.4 assists while Georgi Boyanov averaged 10.4 points and 7.4 rebounds. Nick Stover was a third double-digit scorer and Shaq Calhoun averaged 2.3 rebounds per game. South Alabama will be a team to watch considering its improved its win total each of the last three years and with four of its top five scorers from last season returning. The South Alabama Jaguars have a roster with eight upperclassmen, so if there was a year to compete in the Sun Belt, it would be this season. The South Alabama Jaguars have lost six of their last eight road games.

The UNLV Rebels look to build on last years 18-15 record and have a new head coach in Marvin Menzies. Dwayne Morgan returns after averaging 5.5 points and 4.7 rebounds while Jalen Poyser averaged 5.4 points and 2.1 rebounds. Tyrell Green grabbed 1.3 rebounds per game and played 39 minutes. Needless to say, this is going to be a rebuilding year for UNLV, as the Rebels lost their top seven scorers from last season and return only three players who played a single minute. However, JUCO transfer Kris Clyburn has a chance to be a special player and could keep UNLV afloat in the competitive MWC this season. The UNLV Rebels have won four straight home games.
The Runnin' Rebels are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The over is 4-0 in Runnin' Rebels last 4 overall and the under is 12-5 in Jaguars last 17 road games.
I'm not laying this sort of chalk with a UNLV team that was gutted this offseason and has a new head coach. The South Alabama Jaguars return majority of last years team and is ver experienced to the point starting the season on the road against a good team shouldn't bother them much. Don't love this game, but I'll take a stab with the points if forced to pick.
