The Lafayette Leopards and Villanova Wildcats open the 2016-17 college basketball season Friday night at The Pavilion.
The Lafayette Leopards have nowhere to go but up after finishing with a rough 6-24 record last season. Matt Klinewski returns after averaging 13.3 points and 4.9 rebounds while Nick Lindner averaged 13.3 points and four assists. Monty Boykins was a third double-digit scorer and Paulius Zalys grabbed 3.8 rebounds per game. Lafayette was an extremely young team last season and now returns majority of its key players with some experience under their belt this time around. The Lafayette Leopards are still a young club for the most part with a ton of freshmen and sophomores, but the leadership has improved and there’s a handful of guys on this roster who can put the ball in the hoop. The Lafayette Leopards have lost eight straight road games.

The Villanova Wildcats enter the 2016-17 season with the target on their back after winning the National Championship. Josh Hart returns after averaging 15.5 points and 6.8 rebounds while Kris Jenkins averaged 13.6 points and 2.2 assists. Jalen Brunson dished 2.5 assists per game and Phil Booth grabbed 2.1 rebounds per game. Villanova lost some of its depth with the losses of Ryan Arcidiacono and Daniel Ochefu, but the Wildcats still return three starters and have key bench players still in place. Hart is arguably the best player in the Big East and Fordham transfer Eric Paschall should be able to produce right away. The Villanova Wildcats are once again legit national title contenders with a lot of their production from last year returning. The Villanova Wildcats have won five straight home games.
The Leopards are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Friday games. The Wildcats are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 Friday games and 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The over is 12-3 in Wildcats last 15 overall and the over is 7-3-1 in Leopards last 11 overall.
There's no line on this game right now, but Lafayette doesn't stand much of a chance here. Villanova returns a lot of key guys from last years national title team and is more than capable of making another deep tournament run. Lafayette is young and doesn't get put in these type of sitatuons often. Villanova should win this game by 20-plus points easily.
