The Towson Tigers look to start off strong with a victory as they take to the road to face the George Mason Patriots.
The Towson Tigers look to build on their 3rd winning season in the last 4 seasons after finishing 20-13 last season including 11-7 in Colonial conference play which left the Tigers in a tie for the #3 seed in the CAA tournament where the Tigers were eliminated by Northeastern in the quarterfinals by a final score of 71-60. Towson did play well enough to receive an invite to the inaugural Vegas 16 tournament where they once again bowed out in the quarterfinals, this time to Oakland. Head coach Pat Skerry has done quite a remarkable job in resurrecting the Towson program. After finishing just 1-31 in his 1st season, Skerry has compiled a 75-55 record in the last 4 seasons. The big question for Skerry this season is how he will replace second-leading scorer Byron Hawkins, who transferred to Morgan State taking his 13.2 points per game along with him. The saving grace for Skerry is that he was able to retain the services of his 3 other double-digit scorers in Arnaud William Adala Moto, John Davis and Mike Morsell. The Tigers look to justify their 2nd place projection in the CAA preseason poll, including a pair of first place votes.

The George Mason Patriots look to rebound from their 3rd consecutive losing season where the Patriots finished 11-21 including 5-13 in A-10 conference play which left George Mason 12th in the A-10 where they were eliminated in the opening round of the A-10 tournament by Saint Louis by a final score of 83-78. Head coach Dave Paulsen will look to improve his squad’s position this season, and there’s a good chance that it will happen as Paulsen has retained a good chunk of his key pieces from a year ago including his top 2 scorers in guards Marquise Moore and Otis Livingston II. The most notable omissions from last year’s team to this year will be a pair of big men in Marko Gujanicic and Shevon Thompson, both of whom graduated. Thompson basically averaged a double double with 9.9 points and 10.6 rebounds for the Patriots last season, while Gujanicic contributed 9.2 points and 6.5 rebounds of his own. Not many pundits think as highly of the Patriots however, as the preseason poll projected George Mason to stand pat (no pun intended) and finish in the same 12th position that they finished in a year ago.
Towson is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 vs. the A-10 while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 overall. George Mason is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 vs. the CAA while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 overall and 25-9 in their last 34 home games. Towson is 7-1-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings at George Mason.
George Mason has a lot of ground to make up if they’re going to contend in the A-10 this season, and I’m not sure they’ll get off to a good start against a Towson team that has had their number on their home court in recent history.
I’ll take Towson as more of a fade from George Mason.
