The SIU Edwardsville Cougars and Hawaii Rainbow Warriors open the 2016-17 college basketball season Saturday morning at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The SIU Edwardsville Cougars hope to build on their 6-22 record in the second year under coach Jon Harris. Burak Eslik returns after averaging 14 points and 2.6 rebounds while Carlos Anderson averaged 10.3 points and 2.4 assists. Keenan Simmons averaged 4.4 rebounds per game and Jalen Henry shot 38.4 percent from the field. SIU Edwardsville does return its top two scorers from last season, which should help the Cougars overcome the loss of depth. The SIU Edwardsville Cougars are a very young team overall but have chances to grow up rather quickly with early road and neutral site games on the schedule. The SIU Edwardsville Cougars have lost seven of their last nine road games.

The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors have increased expectations after making the second round of the NCAA Tournament in the first season under coach Eran Ganot. Michael Thomas returns after averaging 7.9 points and 5.6 rebounds while Sheriff Drammeh averaged 1.7 points and 1.1 rebounds. Zach Buscher shot 55.6 percent from the field and Brocke Stepteau played 43 minutes. Hawaii is no longer going to be the exciting, flashy team it was a year ago, as Thomas is truly the only key player returning from last years squad. The Rainbow Warriors are a team that’s completely gutted, but Ganot has shown he may be the right guy for the job and playing in Hawaii is never an easy task regardless of the opponent. The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors have won five of their last seven home games.
The Cougars are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games. The Warriors are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Friday games. The over is 10-3 in Warriors last 13 Friday games and the over is 5-1 in Cougars last 6 overall.
Hawaii may not be the team it was last season, but playing at the Stan Sheriff Center is never easy and it's not like the SIU Edwardsville Cougars showed much a year ago. This is a game the Rainbow Warriors should be able to win and build some confidence before the schedule picks up. I'll side with Hawaii at home by double digits.
