The UC Davis Aggies look for an early road win as they take on the Santa Clara Broncos at the Leavey Center.
The UC Davis took quite the fall from grace a year ago, after posting a 25-7 record with 14 victories in 16 conference games in 2014-15, the Aggies put up just 11 wins overall with 19 losses, including a 6-10 record in conference play, making 2014-15 look just like a fluke as it’s the only above .500 record UC Davis has posted since joining D-I. The main concern for head coach Jim Les is the loss of leading scorer Josh Fox who graduated from the program. Fox posted 14.8 points and 6.8 rebounds in his senior season and was one of only 3 Aggies that averaged double-digit points last season. Luckily for Coach Les, the other 2 double-digit scorers will be returning for their respective senior seasons in the form of Brynton Lemar and Darius Graham. UC Davis will be out to prove they are no flash in the pan and are worth well more than their 5th place projection in this year’s Big West conference preseason poll.

The Santa Clara Broncos posted their 4th losing season in 5 years in 2015-16, putting up an 11-20 record including a 7-11 record in West Coast Conference play to finish 6th before falling in the WCC tournament quarterfinals to BYU by a final score of 72-60. The good news for Santa Clara and head coach Kerry Keating, is that the majority of last year’s squad will return, including leading scorer, guard Jared Brownridge who averaged 20.6 points per game for the Broncos last season. Santa Clara will look to prove that they are worthy of the projection of 5th in the WCC this season, and will most likely play to prove they are worthy of a higher spot as a sleeper in the WCC come March.
UC Davis is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 vs. the WCC while the under is 40-19-1 in their last 60 road games. Santa Clara is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games and 6-21 ATS in their last 27 vs. Big West while the over is 15-6 in their last 21 games overall.
This should be a great game between a couple of hungry basketball teams looking to break through in their respective conferences. I like Brownridge and his ability to put the ball in the hoop for the Broncos a little bit more than I like the Aggies, but in all honesty, this game is the definition of a coin flip. I am hesistant to lay the points here but still feel it is the best option though I am really not feeling verystrong about it.
