The Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks stay in California to take on the USC Trojans as both teams meet for the first time ever.
The Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks opened their season with a strong 74-60 over UC Santa Barbara. Only 3 Mavericks finished better than 50% shooting from the floor, however 4 Omaha players finished with double digits in scoring. Leading the way for the Mavs was Mitchell Hahn who logged 15 points and 5 rebounds with all 5 makes coming from downtown. Zach Jackson made only 3 of his 8 shots from the floor, however did pot 7 of his 9 attempts from the free throw line to finish with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Tre’Shawn Thurman may have had the most efficient night offensively for Omaha as he logged 14 points on 7 of 9 shooting with his only 2 misses coming from beyond the arc. After their opening game, Omaha is shooting 40% from the field, however they are only shooting 25% from 3-point range as they made just 9 of 36 shots however if you take away the 3-point attempts, the Mavs made 15 of 24 field goal attempts for a 62.5% clip. The Mavs also made 81% of their free throws on the night.

The USC Trojans started their season off on the right foot with a 75=61 win over the Montana Grizzlies. USC had a hard time escaping from Montana, leading only by 4 at the end of the 1st half, until the Trojans broke it open in the 2nd half en route to the 14-point victory. Elijah Stewart got his junior season off to a flying start, putting up 30 points on just 6 of 12 shooting from the floor, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range. Where Stewart did most of his damage however, was from the free throw line, where he made 14 of his 16 attempts to go along with 7 rebounds in the game. Shaqquan Aaron also contributed to the cause, potting 6 of his 10 shot attempts including 2 from behind the arc to go along with 7 rebounds of his own. Chimezie Metu was the last Trojan to reach double digits on the score sheet, racking up 14 points on 4 of 12 from the floor including 6 of 7 makes from the stripe. The combination of Aaron, Metu and Stewart made up for over 80% of USC’s scoring in the opener, which could be a sign of things to come over the course of the year as the starting rotation for USC looks to be one of the best they’ve had in recent memory. USC is shooting 41% from the field as a team, including 30% from downtown and 71% from the line.
Nebraska-Omaha is 0-5 ATS in their last 5 road games and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall while the over is 7-1 in their last 8 Sunday games. USC is 15-5-1 ATS in their last 21 non-conference games and 18-7-1 ATS in their last 26 home games while the over is 4-0-1 in their last 5 Sunday games.
While USC had some consistency shooting the rock, the bulk of their scoring came from 3 guys. If Omaha can buckle down defensively, they may be able to give the Trojans fits. The key to this game will be if Omaha can cut down on the missed 3s and take advantage of their solid shooting inside the arc, and I’m thinking they’ll do enough to keep it within the number.
Take the Mavericks and the points.
