We’ve got a great college basketball matchup coming our way Monday from Auburn Arena as the Georgia State Panthers visit the Auburn Tigers.
In their opening game, Georgia State destroyed NAIA Thomas 111-69 for a 1-0 start to the season. The Panthers outscored Thomas 57-32 in the first half and 54-37 in the second half as they cruised to a victory.

In the opener, Georgia State was led by Jeremy Hollowell, who managed 23 points, five rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block in 18 minutes. Jeff Thomas also filled up the stat sheet for the Panthers on 17 points, a rebound, an assist, a steal and a block, while Willie Clayton put up 11 points, 13 rebounds and two steals for a double-double.
Over on the Auburn side, they’re entering Monday’s game with a 1-0 record as well, thanks to an 83-66 opening win over the North Florida Ospreys. The Tigers outscored the Ospreys 49-30 in the first half, then slipped a bit with a 34-36 deficit in the second.
Leading the way for Auburn in their opening win was Bryce Brown, who put up 19 points, three steals, two rebounds and an assist, while Danjel Purifoy wasn’t far behind on 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal. Jared Harper and Mustapha Heron each had 10 points to round out the double-digit scoring.
Georgia State is 9-20 ATS in their last 29 non-conference games, and 8-20-1 ATS in their last 29 games overall. Georgia State is also 1-5 ATS in their last six games following a straight-up win, and 1-7 ATS in their last eight road games.
Meanwhile, Auburn is 6-1 ATS in their last seven versus the Sun Belt, and 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games overall. Auburn is also 2-6 ATS in their last eight Monday games, and 2-6 ATS in their last eight games following a straight-up win.
Both teams looked pretty sharp in their respective openers, but we’ve got to take the minuscule competition with a proverbial grain of salt. That said, Georgia State looked like a team on a mission against NAIA Thomas and didn’t let up one bit. That type of tenacity should go a long way toward keeping this game competitive, and I think the Panthers can cover.
