The Southern Utah Thunderbirds will travel to Chaifetz Arena to take on the Saint Louis Billikens this Monday night in College Basketball action.
The Southern Utah Thunderbirds dropped their season opener after being defeated by the Valparaiso Crusaders, 79-65, this past Friday. Southern Utah shot just 37.0% from the field and couldn’t fight back after being down by a 40-28 margin at halftime. Leading the way for Southern Utah was Randy Onwuasor who had 35 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Southern Utah decided to make a coaching change after going 5-24 last season and hope that Coach Todd Simon can inject some energy into the program which has been at the bottom of the Big Sky Conference over the past few years. Southern Utah returned two starters in Race Parsons (8.4 ppg, 3.9 rpg) and John Marshall (6.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg) and will hope that James McGee (12.1 ppg, 1.9 rpg) can transition to more of a role player for the Thunderbirds. Coach Simon looks like he will heavily depend on Texas Tech transfer Randy Onwuasor who ended up playing all 40 minutes of their opening game.

The Saint Louis Billikens didn’t have any answers early for Ball State and dropped their season opener by an 85-64 margin this past Friday. Saint Louis shot just 35.6% from the field and 25.0% (4-16) from beyond the arc and couldn’t fight back after falling behind by a 43-19 margin at halftime. Leading the way for St. Louis was Reggie Agbeko who had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. St. Louis hired Travis Ford to take over the coaching duties for the Billikens however, Ford didn’t seem have an answer as the Billikens, who ranked 312th in the NCAA in scoring last season, once again had trouble scoring the basketball. St. Louis will rely on Jermaine Bishop (8.9 ppg, 2.0 rpg), Mark Crawford (10.3 ppg, 3.5 rpg), and Reggie Agbeko (6.3 ppg, 6.2 rpg), and Davell Roby (6.3 ppg, 2.4 rpg).
The Thunderbirds are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 road games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win. The Billikens are 20-46-1 ATS in their last 67 games overall and 7-19 ATS in their last 26 games following a straight up loss.
Southern Utah was projected to once again be one of the worst teams in the Big Sky but must be happy with the effort they displayed on the road against a very good Valparaiso team. Saint Louis could be in for another long year as the Billikens just don’t look like they have the offensive firepower to be able to compete in the A-10 and it will likely take Travis Ford a couple of years to get this program turned around. Saint Louis is the better team in this one but I just can’t trust their offense to cover a double-digit spread. I’m taking Southern Utah and the points.
