The Indiana State Sycamores will travel to Worthen Arena to take on the Ball State Cardinals this Tuesday night in College Basketball action.
The Indiana State Sycamores couldn’t pull off a win in their season opener after being defeated by the Northern Illinois Huskies, 80-78 in OT, this past Friday. Indiana State was able to overcome a 70-63 deficit with just 37 seconds left in the game to force OT however, couldn’t pull off the victory in the extra session. Leading the way for the Sycamores was Brenton Scott who had 28 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and a block. Indiana state lost two key starters from last year’s squad in Devonte Brown (15.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg) and Khristian Smith (10.0 ppg, 5.2 rpg) however, did return one of the best players in the MVC in Brenton Scott who should end up on the 1st All-MVC team by season end. Indiana State also returns starters Matt Van Scyoc (7.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg) and Brandon Murphy (4.8 ppg, 4.2 rpg) and will hope that key reserve Everett Clemons (5.4 ppg, 6.3 rpg) can become a major part of the offense at the point-guard position. The Sycamores look as if they will be relying heavily on Freshman guard Jordan Barnes who saw 30 minutes of action in the season opener.

The Ball State Cardinals opened up their season with an impressive 85-64 victory over the Saint Louis Billikens this past Friday. Ball State closed the 1st half on a 18-6 run and had no trouble securing the victory after taking a 43-19 halftime lead. Leading the way for the Cardinals was Franko House who had 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Ball State was one the most improved teams last season picking up 10 conference wins, and enter this season as one of the MAC favorites as they returned 4 starters from their 21-14 team. Ball State will be led by returning starters Franko House (12.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and Francis Kiapway (8.6 ppg). The Cardinals will hope that Sean Sellers (6.4 ppg, 3.0 rpg) can show continued improvement and will rely heavily on Tayler Persons who averaged 13.1 ppg last year for Northern Kentucky. Ball State’s biggest weapon is the three-pointer and we should expect the Cardinals to once again do a lot of damage from beyond the arc.
The Sycamores are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games however, just 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road games. The Cardinals are 6-14 ATS in their last 20 game vs. MVC opponents and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 home games.
Indiana State dropped a heart-breaker in their season opener but should be competitive in the MVC as they generally have a good defense and do have one of the best players in the MVC in Brenton Scott. Ball State was one of the more surprising teams last season and although they’ll struggle at times when the three-pointers aren’t dropping, should have another 20-win season. Ball State is a very good team however, Indiana State is a good defensive team that held Northern Illinois to just 22.2% shooting from beyond the arc, and I think the Sycamores will get enough offense from Brenton Scott and Matt Van Scyoc to cover with the points. Take Indiana State and the points.
